Anal gland expression is achieved in one of two ways:
Non invasive squeezing of the anusThis first method is useful in small dogs and in cats. It consists of gently squeezing the anus to cause the glands to squirt out their contents.
The procedure can be quite painful for the animal and it is useful to have a safe pair of hands holding the patient.
We recommend to wear latex gloves and have some tissue handy to wipe out the cat's bottom.
You need to squeeze until both glands are completely empty.
Intra-rectal squeezing of the anus
This method is more invasive but more efficient, especially for larger dogs. In that case, emptying is accomplished by introducing a finger into the back passage and squeezing the gland down onto this finger.
First it is important to wear lubricated latex gloves.
A lubricated gloved finger is then inserted into the anus.
The anal gland is finally squeezed between thumb and forefinger.
The procedure is repeated on the opposite side.
Again the secretions will usually be collected in a tissue held up the back passage of the patient.

We were doing this proceedure during our small animal surgery classes, and the contents of the gland has a real strong odor that it can penetrate the latex gloves, having the smell in your hand for a week!
THANK YOU I HAVE LEARNED A LOT AND I THOUGHT IT S JUST THE BEGAN FOR ME , thank you to be generous with veterinarian
I volunteer at a vet's office and I was assisting in holding down a dog so he could get his nails trimmed. I was positioned at the rear of the dog and his anal gland expressed and the liquid got all over me. I could not get the smell to go away. It was very gross!
